Welcome back to English 113, and welcome to our new friends from English 098. I hope everyone's holiday break was full of magic and wonder and new adventures. This semester we will be working on three projects with the general themes of web, space, and text.
I have emailed everyone not only the link to this blog, but a syllabus and schedule. Please bring a copy of these to the first day of classes.
Your first project will be to set up a blog. If you have never created one before, here is a site for the basics: Getting Started Guide. Take some time to noodle around with designs and buttons so that when the time comes in the first two weeks to set one up, you will be ready. The first Project will be to create a blog, and we will be discussing the sorts of things you will be posting.
Your first assignment will be to read "Divided We Eat" from the November 22 issue of Newsweek magazine. It will set the stage for our entire discussion this semester. We will be looking at food: how it is produced, how it is transported, how we cook it, where we eat it, what it does to our bodies, what happens when you don't have enough, what happens when you have too much, and what we think about it. These questions will be the start of our exploration around that most human of activities, eating.
Read this article, take lots of notes, and bring them to class. We will be discussing some of the issues raised in the first week.
